Under the leadership of Redtenbacher, the Karlsruhe Polytechnic won worldwide recognition and became the model for the founding or reorganization of many other higher technical educational institutions such as the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in 1855 in Zurich. Redtenbacher's great contribution is the mathematization of machine designs, i.e. he led mechanical engineering from its predominantly artisanal and empirical basis to that of applied higher mathematics. Hence, Ferdinand Redtenbacher paved the way for the scientification of engineering through the consideration of scientific phenomena. A number of known mechanical engineers such as Eugen Langen or Emil Skoda studied with Redtenbacher. The separation of the chemical and mechanics studies consummated by Redtenbacher in 1847 set the stage for the dazzling rise of chemistry and engineering at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic. Redtenbacher pleaded for a broad, humanistic education of engineers and promoted the subjects philosophy, history, literature, economics as well as government and jurisprudence.
