For the recognition of an internship please submit the internship certificate of the company with the type and duration of the internship to the Internship Office. You can submit your documents by e-mail from your @student.kit.edu-account, personally (Monday to Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.) in our office (Building 10.91, 2nd floor, room 223) or drop them in our postbox (on the first floor in building 10.91).

Formally, the certificate must correspond to an employer 's reference (with information on internship status, duration, etc.). In addition, the activities must be described in detail. According to the "Bundesarbeitsgericht", a certificate must be written on company paper and have proper letterhead.

Yes, at least the required number of weeks must be written in the certificate (one working week usually corresponds to 35-40 hours).

Yes. Absence days during the internship must be made up.

Write an e-mail to the Internship Office (important: from your KIT account) and state the name and, if applicable, the matriculation number of the person collecting the documents, who must identify himself/herself when collecting the documents (student ID, personal ID).

According to § 6 of the admission statutes, admission to the Master's program in Mechanical Engineering requires a minimum of 18 weeks of professional internship. At least 12 weeks must be completed as a specialized internship. A maximum of six weeks can be completed as a basic internship.

As a part of the professional internship in the Bachelor's program (SPO 2023) an internship report must be subjectively written. The report should be approx. 0.5 pages long for each week of the internship. For more details, see the internship regulations.

No report is required to fulfil the admission requirement for the Master's program in Mechanical Engineering.

This is possible for students according to SPO 2015 for a voluntary internship that serves the qualification goals.

Students according to SPO 2023 have to fulfil the prerequisite of the 12 weeks of professional internship. In this case, however, a semester of leave is only possible if the internship planned for the requested semester of leave differs from previously completed internships in terms of content or areas of activity and qualification goals (e.g. due to a different industry affiliation or an internship abroad if previous internships took place in Germany).

Please make sure that you enter the semester correctly and write "Bachelor Mechanical Engineering" in the field "study program". You must also submit a copy of the contract of the internship to be completed in the requested semester of leave.

Students according to SPO 2023 need as a prerequisite the recognition of the 12 weeks of internship which is a required curriculum element. Then they need a fully completed application for leave of absence. Please make sure that you enter the semester correctly and write "Bachelor Mechanical Engineering" in the field "study program". You must also submit a copy of the contract of the internship to be completed in the requested semester of leave.

The prerequisite is that the 18 weeks of professional internship stipulated in the admission statutes have been fully completed and recognized. In this case, however, a semester of leave is only possible if the internship planned for the requested semester of leave differs from previously completed internships in terms of content or areas of activity and qualification goals (e.g. due to a different industry affiliation or an internship abroad if previous internships took place in Germany).

You will need a fully completed application for leave of absence. Please make sure that you enter the semester correctly and write "Master Mechanical Engineering" in the field "study program". You must also submit a copy of the certificate of the internship that was recognized to fulfill the entrance requirement for the Master's program in Mechanical Engineering. In addition, you will need the contract of the internship to be carried out in the requested semester of leave with a description of the activities/contents as well as a short statement of how the internships fundamentally differ from each other and a short justification why the internship serves the study objectives in the Master's prgram in Mechanical Engineering.

Please consider the deadlines stated in the application for leave of absence and take into account corresponding processing times. If possible, the documents should be submitted to the Internship Office four weeks before the start of the requested semester of leave.

Students enrolled in Mechanical Engineering (according to SPO 2015) do not meet the legal requirements for this, as the internship is an admission requirement for the Master's program and not a part of the curriculum.

Students enrolled in Mechanical Engineering (according to SPO 2023) can obtain an internship commitment certificate on request at the Internship Office.

Due to the labor law and social insurance, a distinction is made between a voluntary internship and a mandatory internship.
