Mechanical Engineering (International) Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

The Bachelor's program in Mechanical Engineering (International) (MEI) at KIT offers international students the opportunity to earn a highly regarded technical degree at a German University of Excellence. Taught entirely in English, the program provides a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science. These fundamentals are expanded through core engineering disciplines such as engineering mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, manufacturing technology and design. Practical training forms an integral part of the program and includes workshops and a compulsory industrial internship. Students can tailor their studies through elective courses and four specialization areas: Mobility Systems, Energy, Global Production Management, and Applied Materials. Additionally, the program fosters interdisciplinary skills in international project management and teamwork. The six-semester study course concludes with the Bachelor's thesis, enabling students to conduct independent research in a field of their choice.

Special Features of the Degree Progam

The Pre-Semester:

A distinctive feature of the study program is the Pre-Semester, a study preparatory course, which is usually held from August to September. It covers mathematics, physics, chemistry and English to the level of the German Abitur. At the end of the course, participants take an external assessment exam to evaluate their eligibility to study Mechanical Engineering at KIT.

Applicants who are not granted direct admission to KIT must pass this assessment test. Participation in the Pre-Semester is strongly recommended for this group to improve their chances of success. Applicants with direct admission may also attend the Pre-Semester to refresh and strengthen their knowledge in the subjects mentioned above. Information about the admission status (direct or indirect admission) is provided in the official KIT Admission Letter following the application process.

To register for the Pre-Semester, please contact the Carl Benz School of Engineering (CBS), which is responsible for the organizational process. Participation in the Pre-Semester is independent of membership in the College Program.

At university level:

  • German Courses at the Studienkolleg: International students should focus on learning German alongside their studies. Good language skills facilitate integration, foster friendships, and make everyday tasks easier. Good German skills, in particular, significantly improve career prospects on the German job market. The Studienkolleg at KIT offers language courses at all levels. Students can attend one course free of charge per semester and earn credit points upon successful completion.

  • International Studies in Mechanical Engineering (ISIM): ISIM is your go-to contact for all questions relating to studying abroad and exchange programs.

  • Career Service: The Career Service helps students to find internships and provides guidance on application strategies and documents

  • Interdisciplinary Training: KIT provides many opportunities to develop soft skills. The House of Competence (HoC) and FORUM offer courses designed to enhance interdisciplinary skills, independence and personal development.

At student level:

  • University Student Groups: KIT hosts a wide range of university groups that you can join. These groups foster personal and professional development while expanding your network. If you are passionate about motorsport and automotive engineering, KA-RaceIng is an excellent option.

  • Student Council (Fachschaft): The Student Council is run by students for students. They can help with study-related queries, organize events and even provide past exams papers. This makes them a valuable point of contact for other students. As a volunteer group, they are always excited to welcome new members eager to get involved.

Annual highlights at KIT:

  • Day of Mechanical Engineering: The Day of Mechanical Engineering connects students with institutes and industry partners. You will discover internships, thesis and doctoral project opportunities as well as future career prospects, alongside inspiring lectures about the profession.
  • KIT Career Fair: Taking place once a year, the Career Fair offers students a direct way to connect with companies - whether you are looking for an internship, a trainee position or your first professional role.
